OFFICER: Will you both stay in the U.S. for the whole year?
MEERA: Yes, we will. OFFICER: And are you going to work in the U.S., ma'am?
MEERA: No, I'm not. I'll be researching and writing the final paper for my Ph.D.
OFFICER: So you won't be employed by a company?
MEERA: That's right. I'm a student. I won't be a paid employee.
OFFICER: Will you both return to India after your project?
SANJEEV: Yes. We have round-trip tickets. We plan to return after a year.
OFFICER: OK. Thank you. Please get your bags from baggage claim. Then go to customs, where a customs officer will check your bags. Be sure you have the customs form that the flight attendant gave you. Enjoy your time in California.
