Halloween, October 31, is a very old holiday. Many years ago, people believed that winter was a season of death. Ghosts and witches came out during the winter. They made trouble for everyone. So in late October, before the start of winter, people did many things to stop the ghosts and witches. | jack-o-lantern | For example, people made big fires. They dressed as animals and danced around the fires. Also, they cut scary faces into pumpkins and put candles inside. Now we call these pumpkins jack-o-lanterns. The fires, the dancing, and the jack-o-lanterns kept people safe from the ghosts and witches. | Today, we don't think that winter is a bad time. Halloween is now a fun time, especially for children. Children dress in costumes and go to each house in their neighborhood at night. People decorate their houses with scary pictures and jack-o-lanterns. They give candy to all the children. Every child loves Halloween … and many adults do too! | costumes | | |
